EDSGN / IE / ME 547: Designing for Human Variability

Most of what we interact with every day has been designed by engineers–here’s a chance to learn how to improve that interaction. Students will learn the principles of how to incorporate an understanding of variability in human size, capability, and preference into the design of products and environments. It is a unique opportunity to explore material from engineering, statistics, biomechanics, disability and aging research, and business in the context of design problems. We’re going to be gathering data and doing lots of projects: quick ones, a longer one as a class, and team projects. Additionally, we’ll be using design tools and solving problems provided by Boeing, Ford, International Truck & Engine, and Herman Miller–all of whom have assisted in the development of the course.
